When winter is here in full strength, and the weather is just too cold to spend as much time outside with your dog as you normally would… what could you possibly do to keep you and your dog occupied?
Playing in the snow is fun, and your dog might even enjoy it. But lets face it, sometimes its nice to just stay all warm and snug as a bug in a rug indoors.
Today, I would like to share my 10 ways to keep your dog busy indoors.
1. Hide and sniff!
Put a k-9 spin 0n the classic game, hide and seek. Use some of your dog’s favorite treats, and hide them in different areas of the house. If this is the first time you have played this with your dog, start out small, and lead him around to the different spots where you have hidden the treats. Once he gets a hang of the game, he will search for them on his own. You can even go one step further by teaching him the words “hide and sniff.” This means that every time you are ready to play, say the words and he will know that it’s game time!
2. Work on some new tricks!
Maybe there are different tricks you have been meaning to teach your dog, but haven’t had time to do so. The extra time indoors this winter is a perfect chance to spend time training.
3. Doggie play date!
Do you know a friend with a dog, or dogs? Invite them over for a play date with you and your pooch! Play some games, and just let your dog be social. You might be surprised how much they will enjoy each other’s company.
4. Take your dog on a shopping trip!
For this one, you do have to leave your house, BUT taking your dog for a pet friendly shopping trip at the local pet store will be fun for both of you.
This one may not be ideal for human or dog, (although some dogs enjoy it) but it is a great opportunity to spend some extra time brushing your dogs beautiful fur. Take your time, and go over every inch of his body, checking for and abnormal lumps and bumps while your at it. Not only will these grooming sessions keep you informed on the health of your dog, but it can actually be a great bonding time as well.
6. Ever hear of “Doga?”
This is basically yoga, but including your dog. There are DVD’s or Youtube videos which can help teach you the steps of Doga. And while I haven’t attempted this one myself, I have heard it can be quite fun!
7. Play “which hand” with your dog.
This one is super easy, but can be entertaining for you and your pooch. Put a small treat in one hand without your dog seeing. Make a fist with both hands, and let your dog sniff out which hand has the treat. When he gets it right, he gets the reward!
8. If you like finding different ways to exercise with your dog, try playing follow the leader on a set of stairs in your home.
Going up and down the stairs, switching mid way to get your dog to follow every move. This is a great workout for you and your dog, plus he will have a blast wondering which move you will make next.
9. Play a good old game of tug of war.
This one is a classic that will never die, and never gets old.
10. Last but not least….. and my favorite indoor activity – snuggle time.
When its super cold outside, nothing feels better than a warm fuzzy blanket, and a warm loving dog all cuddled up on the couch. Put on a favorite movie (more for you than your dog) and just have a relaxing evening in.
That wraps up my 10 favorite things to do indoors during the cold winter months. If you have anything to add to the list, let us know in the comments, or tell us which one is your favorite off of this list!
